DIY UO Inspired Floor Pillow
I’ve always wanted those floor pillows from Urban Outfitters but could never justify the price, so I decided to make one myself!
Original DIY instructions by The Sorry Girls.
Estimated Time: Depends if you have a sewing machine! I hand sewed everything so it took me about 8 hours total to do everything a little bit every day.
Estimated Cost: $5-30 depends on the price of the fabric you use
Supplies Needed:
- 1 yard (1 meter) of fabric (I used a rust colored velvet fabric I found on Etsy!)
- pillow stuffing (I used the stuffing from an old pillow that I was replacing)
- fabric scissors
- needle and thread
- pins
- ruler/tape measure
- marker
- sewing machine (optional)
Waste Created:
- Unused Thread
- Fabric Scraps (here’s a link for some textile recycling centers near you!)

Step 1: Cut-Out two 25 inch by 25 inch pieces as well as four 26 inch by 6 inch pieces from your fabric.
Step 2: Pin the short sides of the four 26 inch by 6 inch pieces together and sew! If hand-sewing, I used a back stitch for these for a stronger stitch. You should end up with all four pieces connected together to make the edge of the pillow.
Step 3: Pin the two 25 inch by 25 inch pieces on top of the connected edge pieces and sew! Remember to leave a hole on one side so you can pull the pillow through and add stuffing!
Step 4: Once everything has been sewn together, flip the shell inside out. Now you can stuff your pillow as much as you’d like!
Step 5: Once pillow has been stuffed, use a blind stitch to close up the pillow shell.
Step 6: To make tufts in the middle of the pillow, mark 5 dots evenly spread apart. Using a longer needle, sew through the dot and gather it back and forth until it creates a tuft in the pillow. Repeat this for all 5 dots.
Step 7: Lastly, add the tufted edges! Using the needle and thread gather the top and side together around the entire edge of the pillow. Start about an inch from the edge of the pillow and bring the needle out on the opposite side about an inch down. Stitch the needle back in and bring the needle out the opposite side about an inch again. Repeat until you’ve reached the end. Make sure you pull tightly to see the tufted edge form. To keep the tension, periodically tie a knot in the thread.
